Defensive Draftees

Can the Dallas Cowboys get away with this building their “championship defense” via the draft? Yes, they can, but it may take too much time. Rookie contracts in the NFL are good for essentially 5 seasons. The first 4 seasons are negotiated based on where the rookie is picked in the draft. The team will then have the option of a fifth year (on first round picks) with the player if they want to keep him. For this approach to work the Cowboys would have to hit on 2 picks for a four-year span to be able to field at least 8 good to great players. Is this possible? It’s a possibility but unlikely. For the Cowboys to be able hit on 8 good players over a 4-year period they would need to be Nostradamus. Let’s be honest it’s taken them the last three drafts to find a solid pass rusher and if you ask me they still haven’t. To put some context to the likelihood of this happening, let’s look at the Cowboys roster and see which players have been productive pl...

Three Destinations for Tony Romo

When talking to other sports fans about Tony Romo’s future you get one of the two extremes. Either the person feels like Romo can play another 3 years, win a super bowl, and make the hall of fame or Romo is done and will never play a full 16 game season. Somewhere in the middle is probably where it’s safe to project Romo’s future.. Even the biggest Tony Romo fan has to admit that he has some serious injury concerns. Those concerns along with his age don’t really project to another 3 years in the NFL. It also doesn’t mean that Romo will never be able to play another season in the NFL. To the people that think there is no way he will ever make it through a full 16 game season you may be right, but in the right situation he may not have to. Romo has shown the ability to play with broken ribs, and a fractured finger. He has the ability to play through the nagging injuries. In the right situation he may not have to make it through the entire 16 game season. If he c...
It’s been a pretty boring offseason for the Dallas Cowboys. The only major improvement to the team are the return of Tony Romo and Dez Bryant from injury. Aside from that there hasn’t been much to talk about from the Cowboys camp. Tony Romo makes the difference between the Cowboys being an average team and a contending team. To do that he’s going to need his top wide receiver back, a good run game and a solid defense. I want to take this time to glance over the issues with the Cowboys defense.     The biggest concerns with the Cowboys defense is the suspensions. Demarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory will be suspended the first four games of the season. Lawerence lead the team in the sacks last season and Gregory showed flashes of being a very good edge rusher in his rookie season. They were the penciled in starting defensive ends and were supposed to be able to apply the type of pressure the Cowboys need to hide the secondary.     Rolando M...
The 2015 Dallas Cowboys came into the season with one objective, winning the super bowl! Through 3 weeks it looks like that objective has changed. A team that was once consider to be serious contender now hopes to make it through the season without any more injuries. If the Cowboys can keep everyone upright from here on, there is a chance that they can still make the playoff by winning the NFC East division. Here are three reason the Cowboys will save their season.   Defensive Help is on the way             All of the Cowboys major injuries have come to the offensive side of the ball. The offense is what makes this team so dangerous. All offseason us fans were hearing about how improve the defensive unit was. We heard about how both Bryon Jones and Randy Gregory were ready to step in a play this season. To be honest so far all this may be true.             In week one we ...
Cowboys win if? The Dallas Cowboys have a huge game this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have already beaten the Cowboys once this season and have a better division record than the Cowboys. This game will virtually make or break the Cowboys season. If the Cowboys win this weekend and win out the rest of the season then they will be division champs. If the Cowboy lose this weekend then they will need some things to go their way in order to make the playoffs. They better beat the Eagles this Sunday night. The Cowboys win if they pressure Mark Sanchez. There are a few thing the Cowboys can do different, none bigger than pressuring Mark Sanchez. In the first game against Philly the defense wasn’t bad. They went into halftime down 23-7 and were getting the ball back. The game didn’t get out of hand until late in the third quarter. I expect the offense to really show up this time so that alone will force Mark Sanchez to keep pace.   If the defense can force Sanchez ...

2014 through three games

The 2014 Dallas Cowboys have given us everything that we have seen from this team over the past 3 seasons. They have had turnover issues. They have struggled with play calling. We have also seen this defense get shredded by Austin Davis and the Rams receiving corps! They one thing that I see in this team this season is the fight and the desire, that I haven’t seen the last 3 seasons.             It could be the fan in me that wants to believe that this Cowboys team has a different feel to it, but I do. I mentioned all the things that haven’t changed about this team, now let’s go over the things that have.             The first thing is that this team has gotten younger! The Cowboys have players that are making contributions to this team that are either rookies or in their second season. JJ Wilcox has been a ver...

First Game thoughts!

The first weekend of football was amazing as it always is! The 7 month layoff was well worth it. The first weekend has some surprises, some great plays, and some terrible plays. I think that most of the games turned out to be really good games. I would like to say that I consider myself a football fan first and a Dallas Cowboys fan second. Speaking of those Cowboys, they didn’t look to good yesterday.             This is the first year in a while that the Cowboys entered the season with literally no expectations. Many think the defense will reach a historic low this season. Some people don’t think that Tony Romo’s back will last the entire season and Brandon Weedon will have to come in. Whatever you believe, this team shouldn’t have any expectation. They have been mediocre the last three season and didn’t do much this offseason in terms of improving. I say, you hav...
